Manchester United spent more than any other team in the Premier League on injured players last season.

That’s according to new data from Premier Injuries, which shows United spent £25.7m on the salaries of players while they were injured last term. United endured their worst season for decades and were hit with multiple injury problems throughout the campaign.

The data has also revealed United spent in excess of £5m on Paul Pogba alone. Pogba was sidelined with a hamstring injury and a calf injury last season and he made just 16 starts in the Premier League in his final campaign at the club.

Edinson Cavani is another player who became too familiar with the treatment room last season. Cavani missed 29 of United’s 49 matches and asked to sit out the FA Cup tie with Middlesbrough, but he’s now left the club for free, just like Pogba.

Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay, Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane were other first-team players that were forced to be sidelined for long periods through injury. The latter sustained a groin injury in October playing for France and that issue ruled him out for three games.

He made his return against Tottenham later that month but suffered a hamstring injury just one week later. That injury was more severe and Varane was sidelined for well over a month, only returning to play Newcastle after Christmas.

Varane then missed United’s matches against Everton, Norwich and Liverpool in April with a muscular problem. Chelsea were the second highest spenders on injured players last season.
