The Dutch tactician was appointed as United’s permanent head coach last month. He will formally take charge after the final game of the campaign at Crystal Palace.
However, talks are already underway with the club over the summer plans. Ten Hag has now heaped praise on Ronaldo (not for the first time) in a final interview with Ajax.
The 52-year-old recalled his touchline discussion with Ronaldo back in April 2019 when Ajax had just beaten Juventus in the quarter-final of the Champions League.
He said: “That was an interesting chat. I think he could appreciate the way we played. He is a true winner and a magnificent player. I can’t wait to work with him.”
The £31.5 million-rated star has had an impressive homecoming season with United with 24 goals. He has clearly been a cut above the rest in the scoring aspect.
Bruno Fernandes is United’s second best scorer this term with just 10 goals. Over the campaign, there has been an overdependence on Ronaldo to find the back of the net.
Meanwhile, there has been much talk about United pursuing a new striker, but it has recently emerged that is not a priority. Ten Hag could give preference to a left-footed right forward.
Hence, Ronaldo could be leading the line regularly next term, and the onus will be on getting the best out of the players around him. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford need a big improvement.
After a huge outlay last summer, Sancho has netted just five goals, the same as Rashford, who has looked void of confidence after a shoulder surgery which was anticipated to improve his displays.
