Tahith Chong has sent a heartfelt message to Birmingham City and its supporters after a rollercoaster season on loan with Blues. The gifted Manchester United attacker leaves at the end of his time on loan at St Andrew’s during which he impressed everyone with his talent and commitment.

Chong made a flying start to the season, earning frequent man of the match awards and providing Lee Bowyer’s side with the cutting edge it so clearly needed. However, his progress was interrupted at the end of October when he suffered what seemed an innocuous thigh injury but which required surgery and kept him on the sidelines for four months.

He returned at the end of February, scored within three minutes of his first start back – only to break down again with a hamstring injury a few weeks later. He did, though, manage an hour in the last game of the season – a 2-1 loss to Blackburn Rovers.

And as he considers his next chapter the former Netherlands youth international took to Instagram to send Blues a message: “ Birmingham City as a whole i would like to say Thankyou for this season. I have felt the love from the moment i stepped in. This past year Birmingham has felt like Family to me and for that i will forever be grateful.

“A Thankyou to the manager for the trust he showed me. All the staff for helping me thru the season and lastly i want to say thankyou to the fans for all the support they have showed the team. Birmingham will always be family.KRO.”

Blues are known to be keen to see the 22-year-old back at the club next season – but head coach Lee Bowyer says he must first return to Old Trafford to prove himself to Erik ten Hag. Speaking earlier this month Bowyer advised: “I think it’s too early, this my personal opinion, Tahith has to go back to Man U, because there is a new manager. He has to show the manager and fight for a position to be in their squad – that’s what I think.

“If it doesn’t work out for him then what I do know is that if he does then go on loan I know he has loved it here, he has loved working with us, he has improved. Do I think he would like to come back? I would like to think so yeah. The problem is there might be others that will want to take him that might offer something a bit different to us.”

Chong leaves Blues having scored one goal and provided three assists in 20 league matches. It has been claimed United have triggered the final year in his contract.
