As football fans there is nothing we like more than reminiscing over past glories.
Looking back to fonder years at Manchester United, supporters on the Stretford End could look forward to seeing the likes of Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and Michael Carrick playing pivotal roles in the centre of the park.
The sad thing is, you don’t have to read old comments from Yves Bissouma to know he could improve the current crop of United midfielders.
When asked on the BBC’s Football Focus who he believed the best midfielder is in the Premier League, the Malian said: “I don’t want to be arrogant, but it’s me because in my head I am working to be the best.
“So I cannot say another name, I know in the Premier League there are so many good midfielders, but for me, it’s me because that gives me the confidence and the energy to work hard to show people I am here and I am Bissouma.”
United’s midfield has lacked inspiration all season and, right now, Scott McTominay and Fred should not be undroppable.
They have consistency flaws that are unlikely to worry any potential new signings in the midfield region.
Bissouma has once again been linked with the club but his manager remains firm on keeping him on the south coast.
“I’m confident [of keeping Bissouma],” said Brighton boss Graham Potter.
“I think Yves is enjoying his football here but with the transfer window, you never know. You always plan for something you can’t necessarily foresee. We’re in a good place. We’ll see.”
Declan Rice and Amadou Haidara are two of the other names touted as potential signings, but it’s slim pickings in terms of the players United are tracking in terms of midfield recruits. It’s not obvious who they should sign; simply that any signing right now would probably improve the situation.
United no longer need to find the best players in the league to improve on what they have got — all they need to show is that they can put in maximum effort on the field for their side, which is a sign of how far the club has fallen.
Bissouma has shown that effort in spades for Brighton in recent years and maybe some of the current United players need to show it on the pitch.
