Manchester United 'rejected £50m Chelsea bid' and more transfer rumours

Manchester United rejected a £50million bid from Chelsea for back-up goalkeeper Dean Henderson two summers ago, it has been revealed.

Henderson, who excelled in two successive loan seasons at Sheffield United, returned to Old Trafford in the summer of 2020 knowing he would have to unseat David de Gea to claim the number one spot.

The Englishman, who has also lost ground to Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale in the battle to be England’s number one, has been unable to forge a starting role for himself, with de Gea now enjoying some of his very best form.

It leaves Henderson in the lurch, with reports of United rejecting a £50 million offer only adding another layer of complexity to his situation.

As per Andy Mitten on the The Athletic’s ‘Talk of the Devils’ podcast, Henderson was the subject of an offer from Chelsea, who were hoping to sign a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, who made a series of high-profile errors following his world-record move to Stamford Bridge in 2018.

“Chelsea had offered £50m to United for Dean Henderson when they were last looking for a goalkeeper, around the start of the previous [2020-21] season,” said Mitten.

Instead, Chelsea signed Edouard Mendy, who has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League ever since, while Henderson has had to remain patient to earn regular minutes.

Elsewhere, it is being reported that Edinson Cavani could join Barcelona in January or at the end of the season due to concerns regarding his playing time.

Cavani has only played 214 minutes of Premier League football this season, and, per Turin newspaper Tuttosport via Sport Witness, the striker has known United are not counting him and believes his time at the club will come to an end in the summer.

The report links Cavani with a move to Juventus, while Mundo Deportivo of Catalunia via Sport Witness, has linked Cavani with a move to Barcelona, where he would join Xavi.

The report says Barcelona have highlighted centre-forward as a major need and that they must also find a cheap and available solution to the position.

Given Cavani will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, he could tick both boxes.
