Former Chelsea, West Ham, Liverpool and England midfielder Joe Cole believes the Premier League’s bottom club Newcastle United could spend up to 300 million pounds in the January transfer window as they try to avoid relegation.

Many Magpies fans will have seen Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at home to fellow strugglers Norwich City as a missed opportunity after Teemu Pukki‘s volley 10 minutes from time cancelled out Callum Wilson‘s penalty.

The draw sees Newcastle stay 20th in the league, six points from safety, but there is optimism that their recent takeover and the riches that came with it can help drag the club to survival come May.

“They’re going to spend 200m pounds to 300m pounds in January, as [the owners] have not come in to play games,” said Cole when appearing on Amazon’s Premier League coverage.

“They’re the richest owners that we’ve seen and I think in January they’ll just throw money at it. I think there’ll be four or five players coming in.

“Once they get one win and get settled then they’ll kick on.”

There have already been signs of improvement from Newcastle since Howe took charge following Steve Bruce‘s sacking and the attack-mindedness of his playing style is sure to warm him to the ever-loyal Toon Army who now support the richest club in the world.

Newcastle still have six games to play before the January transfer window opens, starting with a home game against 18th placed Burnley, who are also in desperate need of results.

Games against Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United are also still to come this calendar year but things may be turning around soon for the Black and Whites.
