Rio Ferdinand compares Mauricio Pochettino to Thomas Tuchel and makes Erik ten Hag verdict

Rio Ferdinand has rubbished suggestions that Mauricio Pochettino would be unable to make it at Old Trafford on account of his ‘struggles’ with Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United sacked manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday morning and their initial plan was to appoint an interim until the end of the season.

PSG are understood to have already knocked back one approach for coach Pochettino – who was incidentally in Manchester last night as his star-studded team, including Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, were soundly beaten by Manchester City.

Having previously spent six years managing Southampton and Tottenham in the Premier League, the Argentine is still a preferred candidate to replace Solskjaer on a permanent basis.

However, that would-be appointment requires heavy compensation (around £10million).

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag has been mooted as another potential option – while a succession of managers have been linked with the interim position.

Speaking on BT Sport about the situation, pundit and former United player Ferdinand said: ” I’ve heard people say if Pochettino struggles with this team – with, on paper, better players – how will he do it at Man United?

“To counter that you look at Thomas Tuchel – he couldn’t do it with this PSG team, so it’s unfair to judge Pochettino on his time at PSG.

“Out of all them, I think Pochettino is the most likely [to be appointed].”

Ferdinand added: “What you’ve been crying out for United is DNA and that’s no question with his team in Ajax.

“Yes everyone expects him to win the league, but you still have to do and create a way of playing that suits your players. He went through a phase of rebuilding, because they got rid of their three best players.

“He’s managed to gel it all together. He knows how to put teams together – and that’s definitely an ask for United.”
