Aston Villa fans are awaiting Sunday’s game with West Ham United with trepidation.

The Hammers have continued where they left off last season with a flying start to the 2021-22 campaign, losing only twice in the Premier League.

They are fourth in the table with 17 points from nine games and beat Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on penalties at the London Stadium, ending a run of wins in the competition for Pep Guardiola’s side that stretches back to 2016.

Little wonder, then, that Villa fans are feeling nervy ahead of Sunday’s game.

Villa are on a run of three straight losses and last season’s match against West Ham at Villa Park saw David Moyes’ side cut Dean Smith ‘s men open at will, easing to a 3-1 win in B6.

This time around West Ham do not have Jesse Lingard, who has returned to Manchester United after his loan spell in the capital, but that has not been a problem for Moyes’ men who have been outscored by only Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City this season.

“Congratulations to West Ham for their qualification,” Guardiola said after the Carabao Cup game in East London.

“One of the toughest games we played at home last season was against them.

“They are doing well in the Premier League and in the Europa League and now in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

“Fantastic team and fantastic manager.”

Some Villa fans took to social media after the Hammers’ defeat of City and had their say on Sunday’s game.

One said: “There is just no way we win this, West Ham are so powerful. We just can not cope with that physicality.”

“West Ham have a strong well organised team under Moyes and they are a hard team to break down,” another added while a third supporter said: “I expect us to lose this, West Ham are where we want to be right now.”

Another added: “I can see us getting a point but think three points will be very difficult.”

A fifth Villa supporter said: “I think they are better than us to be honest.”
