Legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson’s previous comments on Antonio Conte have emerged amid reports linking the Italian with replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer is facing mounting pressure having guided United to just three wins in the last eight games, with the latest low point coming on Sunday.

Liverpool were the visitors to Old Trafford, with the Reds humiliating Solskjaer’s men as Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win.

Though he looks set to stay in charge for the trip to Tottenham this weekend, the Norwegian is very much on the hot seat, with former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Conte the favourite to replace him.

Conte has won the Premier League, Serie A and FA Cup over the course of his managerial career, a CV that stands in stark contrast to Solskjaer’s.

The Italian is currently a free agent having left Inter over the summer, further putting the pressure on Solskjaer to turn around results.

When he first took over at Chelsea, Conte took the Premier League by storm, with his 3-5-2 formation helping the Blues to storm to the title.

Conte won the Premier League trophy in his first season at Chelsea

They lost just five league games across that campaign, winning 30, an achievement he followed up by winning the FA Cup in his next season.

That is something that caught the eye of Ferguson, who, if he stands by his previous comments, would clearly love to see Conte take over at Old Trafford.

“Fantastic, you see his energy on the pitch. There’s a true saying that the team mirrors the manager, and that’s what they’ve done with him,” he told Sky Sports in 2017.

“His team have stayed top of the league for so long. They lost to Arsenal and Liverpool early on, but since then they’ve been up.”

Solskjaer is set to get at least one more chance to save his job when he takes the Red Devils to Tottenham in Saturday’s evening game.
