Manchester United legend Gary Neville thinks his old side’s humiliation at the hands of Liverpool was in the making after defeat to Aston Villa last month.

United were hammered 5-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s Reds at Old Trafford, one of, if not, the worst days in the hosts’ history with them 4-0 down at half-time.

Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick and Diogo Jota and Naby Keita were also on the scoresheet for Liverpool while United had Paul Pogba sent off 15 minutes after he was introduced as a substitute at the start of the second half.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time at the Red Devils looks to have reached a nadir but the writing has been on the wall since September.

Villa went to Manchester and won 1-0 through Kortney Hause ‘s late header exactly a month ago, a result that in isolation could be labelled a shock but looking at the visitors’ performance on that day and United’s subsequent results it clearly was anything but.

However with Solskjaer’s side winning only twice in their last nine games their overall form has not been good enough.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of the match, Neville said: “I have not enjoyed these last nine games, I think this has been coming.

“The performances this season have been worrying: Atalanta, Villarreal, Everton, Villa, Leicester City and even Newcastle United and other teams.

“They have been cutting us open and creating chances like you would never believe.

“This is a culmination of events over the last few weeks and the manager and players have got to stop it otherwise they will all be under massive pressure.

“Ole is already under massive pressure.”
