To his credit, he did attempt to get on the ball and make things happen whenever possible, but in his desperation to do so often wound up dropping too deep to really hurt the Hammers.

Ndombele drifted to the left-hand side to try and pick up pockets of space away from the congestion in the middle of the park and played a key part in Tottenham’s bright start to the second half.

Two incisive passes through to Harry Kane from the midfielder were smartly stopped by West Ham’s sturdy defence stood firm.

Ndombele struggled to impose himself in the final third of the game following Antonio’s strike as Spurs huffed and puffed to try and find a route back into the game.

Unfortunately for Ndombele, after arriving for such a huge sum and with high expectations, he’s the player who should be providing that spark for Spurs in games like this.

And because of that, the jury remains out on Ndombele – who despite his upturn in form, still has to discover another level if he is to avoid being labelled as a big-money flop.
