PSG 2-0 Man City highlights and reaction as Lionel Messi and Idrissa Gueye strike for Paris

Pep Guardiola couldn’t mastermind another victory over Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 tonight as Manchester City were beaten by the French giants in an entertaining Champions League clash

City won home and away against PSG earlier this year in last season’s Champions League semi-finals, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men adding Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnaruma, Gini Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi over the summer in response.

Messi started the game, along with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, while Guardiola named Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez in his starting XI.

PSG started well, scoring through Idrissa Gueye, while City should have gone in at half time level after Raheem Sterling and then Bernardo Silva hit the bar from close range in quick succession. City had chance after chance in the game, but couldn’t get an equaliser, and a brilliant Messi strike won the game for PSG in the second half. After Club Brugge beat Leipzig, both they and PSG overtake City as Group A is now wide open after two games.

Dias plots reaction at Liverpool

Manchester City players were frustrated after falling to a 2-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain, but are already plotting a response at Liverpool on Sunday.

That is according to Ruben Dias, who admitted City simply didn’t take their chances against PSG as Idrissa Gueye and Lionel Messi scored in either half to earn three points in the Champions League Group A.

However, after a morale-boosting win at Chelsea at the weekend, Dias believes the PSG result will have no bearing on City’s chances at Liverpool on Sunday.

“Essentially, it’s a frustrating night for us,” he said after the game.

Pep hails Messi, but ‘loves’ his teammate

Pep Guardiola declared that it is “impossible to control” Lionel Messi after his ex-Barcelona star sank Manchester City in the Champions League.

But the Blues boss declared his “love” for another Paris Saint-Germain star after his team went down 2-0 in the group game at Parc des Princes.

Messi praises City

Lionel Messi speaking post-match:

“I hadn’t been able to play recently and this was only my second game in this stadium. I’m adapting to my new team. The more we forwards play together the better our relationship will be. We all need to grow together and improve and keep giving our best.

“They were great opponents. It was very important for us to win the match after our draw against Brugge. I’m very happy to have scored.”

Verdict: City fall to Messi magic, but the Champions League can wait

If Manchester City had to lose one of this epic trilogy of matches, you can bet this is the one they would have chosen.

So while there will be an air of disappointment at going down 2-0 to a goal from Idrissa Gueye and Lionel Messi‘s brilliant strike, this was clearly of minimal impact.

Messi scores!

He’s been quiet all game, but he’s put City 2-0 up with a typically stunning finish.

He gets the ball in City’s half, advances towards the area and feeds Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe knocks it back to Messi on the edge of the area, and the former Barcelona man curls a lovely effort into the top corner to Ederson’s left. Game over?

Half time!

PSG lead at the break through Idrissa Gueye’s early goal.

It’s been practically all City since then – aside from one chance where Marquinhos almost scored – and the Blues should be level after Raheem Sterling and then Bernardo Silva inexplicably hit the bar in quick succession.

City are far from out of this one, but have work to do in the second half.

After quite a lengthy stoppage, Idrissa Gueye gets to his feet and a stretcher is ushered away.

PSG were trying to get more serious action taken against De Bruyne.

39′ – PSG 1-0 CityJoe Bray

De Bruyne booked

Kevin De Bruyne catches Idrissa Gueye late and gets a booking. It’s not a pretty tackle, and he could be lucky just to get a yellow – De Bruyne’s studs caught Gueye high on the ankle on the follow-through after getting the ball.
