Juventus starlet Matthijs De Ligt has revealed that he is no longer comfortable in Italy and has been signalling to the club that wants to move away from the Serie A giants as soon as the coming summer, reports Xavi Campos of TV3.
The Dutch defender reportedly believes that he made a mistake two years ago by packing his bags for Turin, when he had the chance to sign for Barcelona. Now the Catalan club once again seems to be one of his preferred destinations for a potential transfer.
De Ligt and even his entourage have apparently acknowledged that they made a mistake by choosing Juventus over Barcelona two years ago. De Ligt was heavily linked to the Blaugrana along with Frenkie de Jong, who, of course, did end up signing for the Garnet and Blue outfit in a big transfer.
Now the defender says he would love to reunite with his former-Ajax teammate de Jong to play in Barcelona colours. The midfielder has enjoyed a stellar season this time around under Ronald Koeman, gradually working his way up to the potential he was signed to show in a sparkling midfield.
After the way Barcelona’s season ended, it became more and more obvious why the team desperately needs a world-class centre-half to marshall the backline. With Gerard Pique showing signs of ageing rapidly, while Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti constantly faltering, Barcelona need to shore up their defense to support the youngsters Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza’s growths.
However, a move for De Ligt is largely impossible given the economic environment at the club. The defender has a contract in force till 2024, and if that was not enough, he is represented by Mino Raiola, which is never a recipe for a low fee.
