Man City news: Leroy Sane eyes early injury return to hand Pep Guardiola major title boost | Football | Sport

Manchester City winger Leroy Sane should recover from anterior cruciate ligament damage by February in a boost to Pep Guardiola.

Sane suffered knee damage in City’s Community Shield victory over Liverpool in August and was expected to be out until March at the earliest.

But according to The Sun, City staff are now hopeful that the German will be back fit and firing in February.

Sane is currently undergoing rehabilitation work in Los Angeles along with members of City’s backroom team.

The 23-year-old’s stay across the pond has seen him improve to a level where he is working in the gym and leg pressing 20kg.

Further progression in the form of jogging and stability work are expected after the upcoming international break.

Sane’s doctor in Germany, as well as City’s conditioning team, have been pleased with his convalescence and the player is also said to have told friends he is ahead of schedule.

Sane joined City in the summer of 2016 and has made 53 goal contributions in his time at the Etihad Stadium.

If he was to return in February it would serve as a welcome boost to Guardiola as City try to win their third straight league title.

The Citizens face table-toppers Liverpool this weekend in a blockbuster clash which could heavily sway the title race.

Guardiola heaped pressure on Liverpool before the match, saying: “For me as a manager, I said last season when we won the Premier League, that they are the best contender I’ve faced in my career.

“That’s why to win this league was one of the biggest achievements we’ve achieved as a club, as a person, and it remains the same.

“So probably right now they are the strongest team in the world.”
