‘Right track’ – Birmingham City’s injuries and suspensions in full ahead of Fulham clash

Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet will have to deal with a number of injury concerns as he prepares his team for their next clash in the Sky Bet Championship.

Blues resume their league campaign this Saturday as they take on Fulham at St Andrew’s.

Pep Clotet’s side are currently in 12th place in the Championship table with 22 points from their opening 15 matches, while Fulham are four places and one point ahead of Blues.

Clotet will be thinking about changes – but what about injuries and suspensions?

SUSPENSIONS

Harlee Dean will likely miss the next three matches – against Fulham, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield wednesday.

Dean was shown a straight red card by referee Andrew Madley in Saturday’s 4-2 defeat to Cardiff City.

Dean was involved in an incident with Joe Ralls in which he caught the Bluebirds midfielder, who scored three of Cardiff’s goals, as he jumped for a header. Dean went up for the ball while Ralls did not jump and Madley considered that a serious enough offence to show a straight red.

Details

The Ecuador winger was carried off on a stretcher against Stoke City, giving rise to fears his loan from Swansea could be compromised.

But he’s recovered far quicker than expected after making the most of the previous international break, and could even be available for selection after the forthcoming international break.

Last match: Birmingham City 2 Stoke City 1 – Saturday, August 31

What Clotet said: “He has started to train with the team this week, he is working a lot on his fitness as well because he was working on getting on his injury, so I hope we can have him available fairly quick but obviously not Saturday.”

Potential return date: Huddersfield Town (A) – November 23.

Maikel Kieftenbeld

Injury

Knee

Details

The Blues midfielder went down in pain during the second half of the 1-0 win against Leeds in April and had to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher.

Then boss Garry Monk admitted afterwards that it didn’t look good and a scan confirmed Kieftenbeld would be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Dutchman damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee – he might not be back until Christmas.

Last match: Birmingham City 1 Leeds United 0 – Saturday, April 6

What Clotet said: “From the reports that I have we are expecting him to try to join us in training for January or February, we are not putting much pressure on it because every knee is different but I do know he is doing very well in his recovery and probably the timing will be around that.

“Normally it’s around six to eight months to be on the grass so he is going to hit that because he is a very good pro and he has done everything by the book with his knee. He is on the right track.”

Potential return date: Six to nine months

David Stockdale

Injury

Hand

Details

Back-up goalkeeper Stockdale suffered a training ground injury making a save the day before the 2-1 win against Luton. Connal Trueman backed up Lee Camp against The Hatters – and did so again in the 4-2 defeat away to Cardiff City.

Last match: Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham City (EFL Cup) – Tuesday, August 6

What Clotet said: “Stocky is having a scan today on this problem in the hand but I don’t think it is going to be a long one as I said last week.”

Potential return date: Huddersfield Town (A) – November 23.

Gary Gardner

Injury

Knee

Details

Gary Gardner has undergone a ‘minor operation’ on a knee injury that will keep him out until at least after the international break.

The Birmingham City midfielder hurt himself as he took a late free kick in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Leeds and has missed every game since.

Last match: Leeds United 1-0 Birmingham City – October 19

What Clotet said: “On that free kick against Leeds it was not right on his standing leg he fell straight away. It was something in the knee.

“He got checked on Sunday by a specialist and this morning had a little surgery in London.

“There was a piece of meniscus removed, a minor operation. It’s not a big thing but I hope he’s going to be back in four-to-six weeks.”

Potential return date: End of November.
