Ed Woodward insists Man Utd are still following three key philosophies at club

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has spoken about the key philosophy’s that the club strives to adhere to over time.

The Red Devils are enduring a torrid time at the moment after a sustained decade of success under the tenure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Under the Scot they won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League’s along with countless other domestic and European trophies.

But since then they have not come close to winning another Premier League title and are having to watch on as bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool battle it out at the top.

Despite spending close to £1billion on new players since Ferguson retired, several managers have brought with them their own ideas and the team’s identity has been questioned at times.

Under the likes of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal the style of football was criticised by fans and pundits alike.

Many thought that the defensive approach to games was not within the framework of ‘The Manchester United way’ of playing attacking, free scoring football.

Woodward has himself often been criticised for his interfering with player recruitment because of his non-footballing background.

The 47-year-old often likes to keep himself out of the limelight but gave an in depth interview with Manchester United fanzine United We Stand last week.

And he insists that the philosophy of the club remains the same as it did throughout the Ferguson years and previous to that.

“Winning; playing attacking football with players that have an ‘x-factor’; and giving youth a chance,” he said when questioned about the values of the club.

“Added to that, we want players to come in who respect their team-mates, the club, the history.”

United have made their worst start to a season in 30 years under current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the pressure is mounting on the Norwegian.

A 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool on Sunday at least offered him some sort of respite but the fact remains that the Red Devils are still only two points above the relegation zone.

Solskjaer remains adamant that he has the backing of Woodward and that the team are embarking on a project that will take more than a couple of transfer windows to rectify.

It remains to be seen how long he will be given to turn things around if results do not improve, however.
