Aston Villa fans ‘not interested’ in striker as Marvelous Nakamba lauded

Targett-ing City shock

Aston Villa goal hero Matt Targett has revealed what Dean Smith has said ahead of Saturday’s daunting trip to Manchester City , beaming: “We will go there and take them on.”

The left-back bombed on against Brighton and finished with aplomb in the 94th minute after being set up by man-of-the-match Jack Grealish .

And speaking ahead of City on Saturday, Targett said: “We have our style of play and yes we respect them, they are the champions.

“But we will go there and try and beat them. It has been done before, by Wolves, so that gives us confidence. We will go there and take them on, the manager has already said that.”

Senior stars

Aston Villa’s under-23s – featuring Jonathan Kodjia and James Chester – eventually saw off Fulham at Villa Park in front of Dean Smith and John Terry.

Mark Delaney’s young Villa side also included Lovre Kalinic in goal and Kortney Hause, the latter partnering Chester before Villa’s club captain was replaced after 70 minutes.

Kodjia, meanwhile, looked pretty poor and rarely got a foot hold in the game, struggling throughout. It was his replacement, Indiana Vassilev, who scored Villa’s winner on 82 minutes, moments after coming on for the Ivorian. Here’s a look at of our player ratings:

JAMES CHESTER: Hasn’t played since January and is well on the way to returning to Dean Smith’s match-day Premier League squad. Was a loud voice and kept the defence in check. Took a nasty one to the head after challenging a cross with the Fulham goalkeeper. Had a load of Vaseline whacked on though and returned and played soundly, including putting a great ball over the top to put Archer in on goal before being replaced by Reven after 71 minutes. Turns 31 in January. 6.5

Can James Chester force his way back into Aston Villa?

JONATHAN KODJIA: Huffed and puffed as Villa’s lone striker. Was in his fitted mask after breaking his cheekbone a couple of weeks ago during training. Needs to work on his match sharpness, had a few loose touches of the football and will need to be more immaculate. Looked sluggish in front of watching Dean Smith and replaced on 79 minutes before heading straight down the tunnel. It wasn’t good, in truth. 5

Villa vow

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is delivering on the vow he made to Jamie Redknapp.

Redknapp has revealed that during a recent conversation between the pair, Grealish told him he wants to take more risks with the ball to have more influence in the final third.

He grabbed his second Premier League goal of the season with the equaliser against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, before setting up Matt Targett’s late strike that saw Villa claim a 2-1 win.

Writing in the Daily Mail, former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Redknapp said: “I spoke to Jack Grealish recently and he told me he wants to take more risks. Some midfielders like to play it safe, but that is not how you get yourself goals.

“In front of the watching Gareth Southgate on Saturday, Grealish took a risk and scored, helping Aston Villa on their way to what could prove to be a vital 2-1 win over Brighton later in the season. Grealish is showing no fear in his game now.”

Marvelling at Marvelous

Midfielder Marvelous Nakamba is enjoying a good start to life at Aston Villa following his summer move from Club Brugge.

After moving to B6 from the Belgian side in the summer, the 25-year-old was handed his Premier League start in the goalless draw with West Ham last month.

Since then, the Zimbabwe international has made six appearances for the claret and blue, playing a key role in Dean Smith’s midfield.

Nakamba’s international team mate, Alec Mudimu, has made five appearances alongside the Villa midfielder for Zimbabwe.

“Of course, it’s difficult to jump straight into the English Premier League but he (Nakamba) has settled fantastically and is slowly becoming a real household name at Aston Villa, which is great for him I’m sure and, of course, Zimbabwe,” Mudimu told allAfrica.com .
