Rangers strike January plan for Aston Villa transfer target Alfredo Morelos – reports

Rangers have hiked up their asking price for Alfredo Morelos in the face of interest from Aston Villa, according to reports.

Villa are thought to be keen on the Colombia striker as they look at adding to Dean Smith’s squad in the January transfer window.

But Rangers want to hold onto Morelos as they battle Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title and bid to progress from the Europa League group stage.

According to Football Insider, the Gers will demand north of £20m for the 23-year-old if Villa come calling when the window reopens.

Having seen Celtic secure £25m for Kieran Tierney when the full-back moved to Arsenal and then bring in £19m from Lyon for Moussa Dembele, Ibrox chiefs value Morelos above £20m.

The forward took his tally to 15 goals in just 20 appearances this season by scoring the equaliser against Hearts on Sunday.

A fan favourite at Rangers, Morelos’ disciplinary issues have made headlines during his time at the club – something Villa fans have been quick to point out – but he is yet to have been sent off this season.

Smith was asked about the link with Morelos in his press conference before the win over Brighton and said: “Suso’s (sporting director) got all of his scouts out looking at things, but January is a long, long way at the moment and we’ve got a lot of games to play. Watch this space.”

Villa were among the biggest spenders in the Premier League after winning promotion from the Championship, including splashing out £22m on striker Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge.

He has a healthy return of four goals from eight games and has been supported mainly by Keinan Davis – and Jonathan Kodjia who has now returned from injury.
