Neville urges Man Utd boss Solskjaer to enter transfer market at ‘earliest opportunity’ | Football | Sport

Manchester United need to delve into the January transfer market at the earliest possible opportunity, despite their impressive draw against Liverpool.

That’s what Gary Neville believes.

Manchester United managed to stop Liverpool’s 100-per-cent start to the season on Sunday by earning a 1-1 draw against the league leaders.

Marcus Rashford scored the opener before Adam Lallana netted an equaliser with five minutes remaining.

But Neville still thinks there is work to be done on the United squad in the January transfer window.

Much was said about their summer business, after United forked out over £150million on three players.

Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James all joined, but Romelu Lukaku was sold without a replacement ready.

Now, with Rashford struggling in front of goal in recent weeks, it is expected they will dip into the January market for a replacement.

And Neville believes they will need to go out and buy a new striker when the transfer window opens in two-and-a-half months.

“It won’t be a gamble in January as United need to go into the transfer market at the earliest opportunity because they obviously didn’t replace Lukaku,” he said on Sky Sports.

“Those young lads out there – Pereira, McTominay, Wan-Bissaka, Rashford – they have to still buy to a style of play. There would be no point signing a replacement for [Romelu] Lukaku that’s the same type.

“I don’t feel they want to play that way. They have to sign a striker to suit their style.

“Liverpool play with three mobile strikers – with Firmino who does a brilliant job, even when he’s not going to get you 25 goals a season.

“You can find a striker that fits the style of play.

“I don’t feel Solskjaer is looking for a Lukaku type or a [Diego] Costa.

“He wants to play a more mobile three or front two.”
