Man Utd news: Solskjaer handed Rashford warning as Mourinho explains his best position | Football | Sport

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been warned to stop playing Marcus Rashford up front on his own if he wants to get the best out of him by Jose Mourinho.

United drew 1-1 with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday in a positive result for Solskjaer’s side, and it was Rashford who scored the opening goal as he combined with Daniel James.

The England international has struggled to build on his opening-day brace against Chelsea, but now have four goals in the league after converting in the derby.

Mourinho, who was sacked by United last December, believes that the 21-year-old needs to play in a two-man attack if he wants to find his best form in front of goal.

“When we beat Liverpool a couple of years ago, we played with Rashford and Romelu Lukaku up front,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“He is not a target man, he is a man of movement.

“I do not think he is a pure nine.

“If Ole is going to play him as he did today then I think he is the perfect player for him.”

Despite still being in his early twenties, Rashford has now made 181 appearances for United and 36 for England, but Mourinho believes that he has plenty more to learn.

“He’s young but he is experienced,” he added.

“With 21 years he probably has more matches than some players who are 24, 25.

“For me he is potentially a very good player, in some models and in some positions.

“As a number nine I don’t think he has the 30 goals a season in him.

“I don’t think he can get better as a target man.

“To be better as a target man is difficult for him.”
