Five Manchester City players named on Ballon d’Or 2019 shortlist
Five Manchester City players have been named on the shortlist for the 2019 Ballon d’Or award.
The award is widely regarded as recognition for the best player in the world in a calendar year and has been dominated by both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in recent seasons.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is favourite to win the award after helping the Merseyside club lift the Champions League in Madrid.
Both Messi and Ronaldo are also considered top candidates for the prize.
Pep Guardiola guided City to a domestic treble – the first team to do so in England – and his side are well represented.
Sergio Aguero was the first player to be nominated for City after ending the season as their top goal scorer in all competitions. The Argentine has started the season in blistering form as the Citizens look to bridge the gap to Liverpool at the top of the table.
Bernardo Silva was also nominated after being named City’s Player of the Year. The Portuguese international also enjoyed international success as Portugal became the inaugural winners of the UEFA Nations League.
Both Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne also received a nomination.
Raheem Sterling was City’s final nominee after another goal laden campaign. The winger was crucial for both club and country, helping England reach the semi-final of the Nations League with City scooping three domestic trophies.
There was no place for goalkeeper Ederson despite his excellent performances in the City net while Tottenham‘s Hugo Lloris was included.
