FA Cup draw sparks wild scenes as Chichester City earn Round One bye

Chichester City received a bye to the second round of the FA Cup tonight, sparking jubilant scenes amongst the non-league club’s players.

Bury’s expulsion from the Football League, as a result of financial difficulties, means there are only 79 teams competing in the first round of the tournament this season.

Therefore, the final club in the pot at the end of tonight’s draw would advance straight to the second round.

And in amazing scenes, Chichester – the lowest-ranked side in the FA Cup – were the last ball remaining in the draw.

Their players couldn’t believe the news, leaping out of their seats and celebrating wildly after seeing Stevenage vs Peterborough confirmed as the final first-round fixture.

Chichester will receive £36,000 in prize money, but the eighth-tier Isthmian League South East Division side were quick to announce they will be making a donation to Bury.

They have already raked in £82,390 in prize money from their incredible run to the first round, having entered the competition at the extra preliminary round stage.

Miles Rutherford’s men first saw off Erith Town, before thrashing Bridon Ropes 7-2.

Chalfont St. Peter, Hartley Wintney, Enfield Town and Bowers & Pitsea are the other teams they’ve overcome to reach the first round.

Elsewhere, National League Harrogate Town will host two-time FA Cup winners Portsmouth.

The winners of Tuesday’s fourth qualifying round replay between Poole Town and Hayes & Yeading will host League One Oxford.

Elsewhere, Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth are set to go away to National League outfit Harrogate Town

Maldon & Tiptree, who also ply their trade in the Isthmian League, will go away to League Two Leyton Orient.

Overall, nine non-league clubs have been guaranteed a place in the second round.

One more win for the minnows could earn them a tie with a Premier League side in the third round.
