Ballon d’Or: Out of the eight players that ‘condemned’ Lopetegui, only one is shortlisted for the 2019 Ballon d’Or
Ballon d’Or Benzema only one chosen again
When Julen Lopetegui was sacked from his job as Real Madrid boss, the Spanish club insisted that the results didn’t comply with the quality in the squad.
Lopetegui was sacked after just over four months in charge at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, with a large amount of the blame put on the players.
“The board believe that there is a great disproportion between the quality of the Real Madrid squad, which has eight players nominated for the Ballon d’Or, something unprecedented in the club’s history, and the results obtained up until now,” the Real Madrid statement read.
Now, out of those eight players (Thibaut Courtois, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Marcelo, Isco, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema) only one has been nominated for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
Los Blancos’ poor 2018/19 campaign has cost them on the Ballon d’Or shortlist big time.
