Atletico vs Bayer Leverkusen: Koke: Atletico used to be a more mature team
Atletico vs Bayer Leverkusen Lack of experience critical
Koke has admitted that there is a lack of maturity in this current Atletico Madrid squad compared to previous ones.
Los Rojiblancos have struggled in recent weeks and are beginning to feel the effects of losing Diego Godin, Juanfran, Filipe Luis and Antoine Griezmann in the summer.
“There are lots of young players, we had a more mature team before, that’s the reality,” Koke said ahead of Atletico‘s Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen.
“We all used to take responsibility and now that’s what we have to achieve, that everyone assumes responsibility, this is a team.
“We’re a young team that must keep gaining experience and the results will come.”
Atletico have not won at the Wanda Metropolitano in their last four games in all competitions.
“We’re working as hard to win matches at home as away, [we’re working] to feel strong at home and return on this path,” Koke said.
“We have a great opportunity to return to winning ways, we’re really excited [to play Leverkusen].”
One of the reasons for Atletico‘s shortcomings recently is their lack of goals, with neither Alvaro Morata or Diego Costa finding the net frequently.
“It’s not just down to the strikers, the midfielders can also score goals, it’s down to everyone,” Koke said.
“They will come, we’re getting chances and we have to support each other.
“It doesn’t matter if you miss, the chances are coming and the goals will come for both Diego and Alvaro.”
As a result of Atletico‘s disappointing results in recent weeks, Diego Simeone has been criticised for his tactics.
“People often tire of seeing people for so long and we get used to the good,” Koke said.
“We’re not so bad, not so good, but not so bad. We’re three points off Barcelona and the positive results will come.”
