Arsenal player ratings after dismal defeat away at Sheffield United

Arsenal slumped to their second defeat of the season away at Sheffield United tonight, with Lys Mousset’s first-half strike the difference at Bramall Lane.

Unai Emery’s men were looking for a first win on the road since their opening-day triumph at Newcastle, which would move them back up into third place in the Premier League.

In the end, though, they were unable to break through a resilient Blades defence, who held firm after taking the lead through Mousset on the half-hour mark.

Jack O’Connell first got on the end of Oliver Norwood’s corner and headed the ball back across goal, allowing the French striker to tap home and give the hosts liftoff.

Lys Mousset fired in the winner for Sheffield United this evening

Bukayo Saka felt he should have been awarded a penalty five minutes later when he went over in the box under a challenge from John Egan.

But referee Mike Dean wasn’t convinced, instead deciding to book the 18-year-old for simulation.

Dean’s decision didn’t go down well with Arsenal assistant Freddie Ljungberg, who was shown a yellow card for his protests on the touchline.

Emery needed to work his magic at half-time if the visitors were to up the ante and stage a comeback up in Yorkshire.

Gunners boss Unai Emery failed to galvanise his team after a poor first-half

Instead, it was Chris Wilder’s side who came close to doubling their lead on a number of occasions early after the interval.

George Baldock squandered a glorious opportunity in the 59th minute, slicing his shot wide having been teed up by Billy Sharp.

Arsenal’s best chance of the evening unfortunately fell to the wrong man, with Sead Kolasinac’s header from inside the box sailing over the bar.

Starsport have given Arsenal players a rating out of 10 for their performances below

Substitutes: Dani Ceballos 6, Alexandre Lacazette 6, Gabriel Martinelli 5

One positive for them was the return of Alexandre Lacazette, who came off the bench having spent over a month out with an ankle injury.

However, even the clinical Frenchman couldn’t draw the Gunners level as United claimed their first major scalp since returning to the top flight.

Next up for Emery and co is a home clash with Vitoria in the Europa League on Thursday.
