Arsenal news: Patrice Evra slams Bernd Leno vs Sheffield United – ‘I don’t understand’ | Football | Sport
The Blades took the lead on the half hour mark at Bramall Lane when an unmarked Lys Mousset turned home from close range after Jack O’Connell headed down Oliver Norwood’s corner.
However, Evra cannot understand why Mousset was allowed to go unchallenged up against goalkeeper Leno when the corner initially came in.
“I don’t understand [why Mousset was free] but actually it depends as well on the goalkeeper because like we said there are some goalkeepers that like to have someone…” Evra said on Sky Sports.
“It used to be my role at Juventus, so I was like the bodyguard of the goalkeeper to make sure [the striker] didn’t disturb him to get out because actually he can like be in front of the goalkeeper and the goalkeeper can even like maybe reach the ball, so for me it’s really important.
“You have to put a defender to make sure you protect your goalkeeper.
“And actually also, [Mousset was the one] who scored the goal because no one marked him. I don’t understand, you have like a free man in your box.
“Someone should have marked Mousset. I don’t understand.”
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher praised the hosts’ tactics at set-pieces and not just for Mousset’s goal.
“I think what we should say, listen it’s a ball into the box, they were actually really good on an earlier set piece, they played very cleverly,” Carragher said.
“So it’s not a case of just ‘let’s launch it in the box against Arsenal’.
“I think the first corner they had they worked it brilliantly, got it into a crossing position by the byline and just didn’t have that finish that they had there.”
