Hawk-Eye apologises for VAR error during Tottenham vs Watford

Tottenham fail to beat Watford

Tottenham’s 2019/20 campaign got off to a rather lacklustre start.

Despite it only being October, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have already been dealt blows in three separate competitions.

The North London outfit have been ousted from the League Cup by Colchester.

Spurs would be smashed 7-2 by Bayern Munich in a humiliating Champions League defeat.

And just before the international break, Spurs were dominated by Brighton at the Amex, coming away with a 3-0 loss.

So, when Tottenham faced off against Watford on Saturday, it seemed like the perfect game for Spurs to revitalise their season.

The Hornets sat dead bottom of the Premier League when they kicked-off vs Spurs, failing to pick up a single victory in their opening eight league ties this season.

However, despite Watford’s awful form, they would still earn a 1-1 draw with Spurs.

VAR error

It would be Quique Sanchez Flores’ side who took the lead on Saturday in the 6th minute via Etienne Capoue.

Dele Alli would eventually level things up for Spurs in the 86th minute.

However, there was some confusion around his goal.

Alli’s strike would be checked by VAR for handball. But after the decision was made to give the goal, the big screen inside the stadium initially stated no goal was given.

Hawk-Eye Innovations, the company that provides VAR technology for the Premier League has since apologised for the incident:

“Hawk-Eye apologises to Spurs and Watford fans for the confusion caused.

“We are working together with the Professional Game Match Officials Board [the body responsible for professional match officials in England] and the Premier League to understand the root cause of this problem and propose a series of measures to ensure it won’t happen again.” As quoted by BBC Sport.
