David de Gea still believes he could play for Man Utd against Liverpool

David de Gea is still harbouring hopes of playing for Manchester United against Liverpool at Old Trafford later today.

The Spain international pulled up with a groin injury on international duty in midweek and was initially ruled out of the Premier League clash against the European champions.

Argentinian back-up goalkeeper Sergio Romero was expected to make only his eighth Premier League appearance for the Red Devils in five seasons with the club.

But, according to The Times, he still believes there is a small chance of making the starting line-up.”/>

De Gea arrived with the rest of the United players at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester and has been named in the match day squad.

That is despite boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisting that the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper would not be fit.

“I don’t expect him to play but it wasn’t as bad as feared,” Solskjaer said at the pre-match press conference.

“When I saw the game I thought that’s him out until next international break because we’ve had some long-term muscle injuries but it’s not as bad as feared.””/>

United are already without several first team stars for the game against a Reds side that have won their last 17 Premier League matches.

Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw are still out injured while Anthony Martial and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are only just returning to full fitness.

Both Martial and Wan-Bissaka have been named in the squad, however, and could play a part on Sunday.

Martial has not featured in the last eight games due to a muscular injury and his absence has coincided with United’s slump in form.”/>

Going into the game Solskjaer’s side are just one point above the relegation zone after winning only two games all season.

Wan-Bissaka could be in line for a recall, whilst youngster Brandon Williams was again included in the squad along with fellow academy graduates Axel Tuanzebe, James Garner, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and Mason Greenwood.

Liverpool will equal the Premier League record of 18 wins in a row should they come away from Old Trafford with the three points.
