Tottenham ace Dele Alli backed to rediscover form by Paul Robinson

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes it is “a matter of time” before Dele Alli gets back to his best at the club.

It has been a frustrating start to the season for Alli, who is yet to start a Premier League game for Spurs so far.

The 23-year-old’s sole appearance in the competition was as a second-half substitute in their 2-2 draw away at Arsenal at the start of September, with Mauricio Pochettino only using him in Carabao Cup and Champions League outings.

And Alli’s misery reached its nadir this month when Gareth Southgate left him out of England’s squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

Gareth Southgate left Alli out of his latest England squad amid his lack of game time at Tottenham

It wasn’t long ago that Pochettino was touting the midfielder as the best 21-year-old on the planet, but Alli now casts a contrasting figure to the youngster who registered 22 goals and 13 assists in 2016/17.

His lack of game time must be even more puzzling given Spurs’ woeful form of late, which has seen them thrashed 7-1 by Bayern Munich and 3-0 by Brighton.

Robinson insists it isn’t easy to rediscover your best form in a struggling team, yet he is backing Alli to eventually do so.

“He’s been indifferent this year, hence his omission from the England squad, but I think it’s difficult as a player when you’re not playing well and the team around you is not playing well,” he told Football Insider.

But Robinson is backing Alli to rediscover his best form, insisting it’s “a matter of time”

“I think Spurs, there’s been something amiss there, whether it’s Christian Eriksen’s contract or Vertonghen’s contract, Alderweireld’s contract – there’s something that’s just not clicked there at the moment.

“If you’re a player that’s struggling for form and you’re playing in a team that’s not playing well, it’s always difficult to re-discover your form.

“Can Alli get back to his best? Yeah absolutely, I think it’s just a matter of time. It’s a matter of time, confidence and that’s what it is as a player.”

Tottenham will hope to return to winning ways against Watford in the Premier League today.

Pochettino cannot call upon captain Hugo Lloris, however, after the French goalkeeper dislocated his elbow in the defeat at Brighton prior to the international break.

Giovani Lo Celso is also out, while Christian Eriksen is a doubt to feature.
