‘I will get there’ – what former Aston Villa defender said after retiring from football

Former Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar has decided to hang up his boots.

The Spaniard made 94 league appearances for Villa between 2008-2012, arriving from Rangers before eventually departing for Sunderland.

Cuellar said upon his departure from Villa Park in 2012 that it was ‘one of the saddest days’ of his life.

The defender would go on to play for Norwich City, Spanish club Almeria and Israeli outfit Maccabi Petah Tikva among others.

His most recent club were Israeli Premier League club Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv, but Cuellar hasn’t featured regularly since joining in 2018.

He has now decided to hang up his boots to pursue a coaching career.

He told the Scottish Herald after playing in a Rangers tribute match: “I just retired this summer after playing in Israel for the last few years.

“I have started my coaching courses. I would like to stay in football and be a manager some day.

“It’s quite inspiring to see what Steven Gerrard has done, plus a lot of the players I played with in Spain have become managers or coaches.

“The problem for me is that I kept playing until I was quite old and now I have start from the beginning. I hope in few years I will get there.”
