‘No excuses’ Wolves fans are all saying the same thing after Gareth Southgate admission

For what seems like the 50th time of his tenure as England boss, Gareth Southgate is being implored to give Conor Coady a chance.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers skipper has enjoyed a stunning up-turn in form since Nuno Espirito Sano arrived at Molineux in 2017.

Traditionally a central midfielder, the Portuguese head coach converted Coady into a sweeper and the lynch-pin of his defensive triumverate.

After playing with three at the back for much of his time as England manager, Southgate reverted to four defenders after the World Cup run in 2018.

That meant that Coady was on the outside, looking in, with a number of his Premier League counterparts called up instead.

But that may have all changed after England’s dismal defeat to Czech Republic last time out. The defensive pair of Harry Maguire and Michael Keane were exposed on the way to a 2-1 defeat in Prague.

Following that reversal, Southgate hinted that he could return to the shape that saw the national side reach the World Cup semi final last year.

That has led to another clamour from fans across social media for Coady to finally be given his chance:

@Michael49150765: If he will resort 2 a back 3 again with the players out of form still being picked what about @Wolves connor coady as he plays in a back 3 and is in form

@NorthernSooner: Need to add some Connor Coady to the equation

@DwightAdam: Well with three at the back, there is no better defender than Conor Coady. It’s time that Southgate opened his eyes because Friday’s performance was as bad as I’ve seen by England in a long time!

@Sanseofwolf: Step forward our captain , Conor Coady

@GerrytheWulf: Looks like someone should have picked Conor Coady, the best English defender & marshaller of a 3 man defence.

@Chrallen93: If a three man defence is back in Southgate’s thoughts going forward then he must, must, must include Conor Coady in the next squad. Absolutely no excuses now.

@SebandHugo: Back 3? Call for Captain Connor Coady

@White_Wizard: 3 or 4 at the back makes little difference ….just a weak excuse It’s now overdue…Gareth time to call on Conor David Coady
