Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk mistake trolled by fans during Netherlands match Belarus | Football | Sport
Liverpool and Netherlands star Virgil van Dijk misjudged the flight of a cross against Belarus, which subsequently led to a goal.
He was immediately trolled by fans on social media, who claimed that the goal was his fault.
Some fans even suggested that the defender was “overrated”, after making an error “yet again”.
The Netherlands were 2-0 up against Belarus when they conceded the goal, after a brace from Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.
“Awful and sluggish defending from Virgil Van Dijk,” tweeted one fan.
“What a cheap goal to concede !! He just stood there like a f****** statue.”
“Van Dijk mistake yet again,” added another supporter.
One Twitter user simply wrote: “Van dijk suspect defending there.”
“Van Dijk just conceded a very lame goal.”
“Van Dijk overrated anyway…,” added another fan, with another commenting: “Van dijk mistake conceding a goal.”
The ball was crossed into the Netherlands box, with only Van Dijk and Belarussian midfielder Stanislaw Drahun waiting.
The Liverpool defender appeared to miss judge the flight of the delivery, and was caught back-tracking, but failed to catch up to the ball.
Drahun accepted the gift, and headed the ball into the Netherlands goal, past goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.
He was caught with the ball in his own third by striker Dries Mertens. The Belgian passed the ball to former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente, who made no mistake from a few yards out.
Liverpool head to Old Trafford after the international break, as they look to continue their 100 per cent record in the Premier League.
