Chelsea’s Willian, Marcos Alonso and Kurt Zouma should fear for places
Chelsea are in the market for new players despite being under a transfer ban – but that has not stopped them planning for the future.
Frank Lampard has utilised the club’s academy since joining in the summer and is starting to reap the rewards.
Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham are key players this season, with the latter topping the goalscoring charts in the Premier League.
However, it appears that the writing is on the wall for the likes of Willian, Marcos Alonso and Kurt Zouma.
The former will see his contract expire at the end of the year and there has yet to be an agreement made over a new one.
Willian is demanding a two-year deal but Chelsea are only prepared to offer another season.
The Brazil international has flourished in recent games but at 31, Lampard will surely be looking at the future.
And that man is already there after Christian Pulisic joined in the summer from Borussia Dortmund.
So far, it has not quite clicked for the American, who has taken been in and out of the squad this season.
However, despite his meagre playing-time, the 21-year-old still has four assists in seven appearances and will no doubt be a future star at Stamford Bridge.
For Alonso, his steady decline from key player to back-up role has been startling.
If it was not for Emerson’s injury, it would be unlikely that the Spaniard would have featured at all and recent reports state that his time on the pitch will not improve.
The Daily Mail have linked Ben Chilwell to Chelsea over the past week and it is an area on the pitch that the Blues want to strengthen.
It is a slap in the face for Alonso, who must surely be thinking about a potential move away.
Defence has been a cause for concern for Lampard this season, with the west London outfit already conceding 14 times.
To put that into perspective, they let in just 15 all year when Jose Mourinho first rocked up at Stamford Bridge in 2004.
Scouts have been out across the globe looking to identify a world-class centre-back to bolster their backline.
Zouma should be feeling nervous, because after some of his performances, it would not be a surprise to see him out the exit door.
The latest reports have linked Ruben Dias of Benfica to the Blues and, with Tomori and Antonio Rudiger, his arrival would knock the Frenchman down the pecking order.
