N’Golo Kante injury update delivered by France boss Didier Deschamps
France manager Didier Deschamps removed N’Golo Kante from his planned starting XI after the Chelsea midfielder limped off ahead of his country’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Iceland.
However, the France boss insists the move was only a precaution and that the injury is not that severe.
“He felt a pain in the adductor muscle,” Deschamps said.
“He had a feeling where he did not feel comfortable to play.
“I made the decision [to pull him from the squad], because maybe it could get even worse.
“I knew Moussa would be ready.”
France’s next qualifying game takes place on Monday against Turkey and, when asked if Kante would be fit to play in that fixture, Deschamps was unsure.
“I do not think it’s too serious for NG [Kante], but I do not have an answer tonight,” he said.
Against Iceland, Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko came into the side in place of Kante and France were ultimately able to secure a 1-0 win thanks to an Olivier Giroud penalty.
Despite Deschamps’ suggestion that Kante’s injury is not that serious, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will still be concerned over the fitness of his star midfielder.
The 28-year-old has struggled with injury problems this season and has only appeared in half of Chelsea’s eight Premier League games so far.
Kante did feature in the Blues’ most recent game, scoring the third goal in their 4-1 win over Southampton.
As a result of the defensive midfielder’s fitness issues, Lampard has been in constant contact with Deschamps about whether Kante should be selected or not for international squads.
Their discussions led to the former Leicester star missing France’s clashes with Albania and Andorra in September but Deschamps decided Kante should return to international duty this month.
In his press conference last week, the France boss addressed his conversations with Lampard, making a dig about Giroud’s lack of game time at Chelsea.
“Lampard had asked me not to pick Kante at the last break,” Deschamps said.
“If that’s still the way I’m going to call him later to tell him it would be nice if you play Olivier Giroud a little bit!”
Chelsea will be hoping Kante will recover in time for their next Premier League fixture against Newcastle.
