Liverpool news LIVE: January signing backed because of Coutinho, Gerrard plan discussed | Football | Sport
Gerrard management aim
Steven Gerrard isn’t thinking of becoming Liverpool manager just yet, according to assistant coach Michael Beale.
“As a supporter of the club, Steven being a passionate supporter, we don’t just support the first team, we follow it through to the U23s and 18s and we have watched some games together,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“We know what is going on at all the youth teams. He is the biggest Liverpool fan and at this moment in time, if he had to choose a manager, it would be Jurgen Klopp.
“I don’t think Steven is looking too far ahead, it is a big job and obviously that is the dream – or rather, the aim – for him long term to manage the club.
“But I think Steven would say himself, right now, the best manager for Liverpool Football Club is Jurgen Klopp. Long may that continue.”
Muller to Liverpool?
Liverpool’s January transfer business could be helped by Philippe Coutinho, according to German football expert Kevin Hatchard, who believes the Brazilian is pushing Thomas Muller out of Bayern Munich’s side.
Since his move to Bayern, though, Coutinho has impressed and has left Thomas Muller fighting for his place in the team.
And Hatchard thinks that Coutinho’s run of form will push Muller toward a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool on red alert.
“I think there is a genuine discomfort for Muller at the moment because he’s been on the bench for the last five games,” he told the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red podcast.
“People go on about his goal output has dropped, but you look at the assists, he is still very much involved in a lot of the good stuff Bayern can do.
“He’s in a position he’s never really been in at Bayern which is somebody who is having to really scrap for a starting spot.
“The arrival of Coutinho has put him under pressure because Muller operates in that No.10 role. It’s probably the biggest challenge of Muller’s career.
“He’s so elusive, he picks up positions a lot of players simply don’t and I think he’d be a huge boost to Liverpool.
