Liverpool fans can’t believe ace in legends team to face Rangers – ‘Come on now!’ | Football | Sport
Liverpool fans were left surprised to see Jermaine Pennant make the legends team to face Rangers on Saturday afternoon.
The two sides will meet at Ibrox in a charity match to raise money fro the Rangers Charity Foundation and the LFC Foundation.
The 36-year-old spent three years at Anfield before moving to Real Zaragoza in 2009 on the expiry of his contract.
His only memorable moment for the Reds was a stunning strike against Chelsea in 2007 which went in off the bar.
So when Liverpool supporters saw him included in the travelling squad to Glasgow, they all seemed to agree on one thing.
One fan tweeted: “Pennant a legend ?? Come on now!!”
“Pennant playing for us? Furthest thing I can think from a legend,” a third said.
Another posted: “I’ve lived long enough to see Jermaine Pennant in a Liverpool Legends team. Lay me to rest now @god”
A fifth sarcastically said: “Jermaine Pennant the Liverpool legend that he is.”
Steven Gerrard who of course now manages Rangers, starts in midfield for Liverpool.
Yet the former England international is also included on the bench for Rangers.
He hinted earlier in the week that he could make a cameo appearance in the famous blue shirt.
“I always look forward to a game of football,” he said.
“I’m going to play for Liverpool and who knows, there might be a little cameo in a blue shirt as well we’ll have to see.”
