Steve Clarke barks back at Jamie Redknapp row over Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson

Steve Clarke has fired shots at Jamie Redknapp following his comments about Andy Robertson.

The former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder claimed Scotland’s players are dragging the talented full-back down.

The Tartan Army faltered against Russia and Belgium last month with Robertson failing to shine.

In the aftermath, Redknapp claimed the Scotland squad’s limited ability severely hampered the Liverpool left-back.

But speaking ahead tomorrow’s round two with Russia, Clarke hit back.

“If I go down the route of answering one pundit then I have to answer every single pundit who comes out with something that they’re paid to say,” he said.

“He’s a paid pundit, he’s got his opinion and Jamie also has a Liverpool connection so maybe he’s tried to protect Andy a little bit.

“But Andy is a big boy. He doesn’t need protecting.

“Every time I name a squad, Andy is the first to reply, ‘When is it gaffer? I’ll see you there!’

“Like I said, if I go down that route then the next pundit will see that I’ve had a little bite back.

“They’ll want to say something as well to see if they get a bite back because that raises their profile as a pundit.”

Jamie Redknapp has become embroiled in a spat with Steve Clarke

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp publicly defended his influential star last month following his challenges with Scotland.

“The criticism has nothing to do with the expectation. It is to do with the world out there,” Klopp explained.

“He has played well for weeks and months and then you take it for granted.

“If there is one game less than another, you start asking what has happened to Andy Robertson. Nothing.

“It’s completely normal. The game before he was maybe the best player on the pitch.”

Robertson has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the world after signing from the Reds from Hull in 2017.

He’s made 90 appearances for Liverpool, scoring two goals.
