Manchester United fans name their January transfer target

Manchester United fans have near unanimously demanded that the club sign Leicester City playmaker James Maddison in the January transfer window.

United are in dire need of reinforcements in the new year as the summer’s transfer dealings and a growing injury list has left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer drastically short of options.

It has resulted in players being forced to play out of position in a disjointed starting line-up which has contributed to the club’s terrible run of form.

United currently sit 12th in the Premier League following Sunday’s pitiful defeat at Newcastle which has been the latest in a long line of embarrassing results.

MEN Sport revealed last week that United have provisionally earmarked a full-back, a midfielder, a forward and a striker to reinforce their squad ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

United are understood to be compiling a long list of transfer targets which the likes of Maddison, his Leicester teammate Ben Chilwell, West Ham‘s Declan Rice and Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund fame are all thought to be on.

While it seems highly unlikely that Sancho will be going anywhere until next summer at the earliest, the other three targets might be able available for the right price.

MEN Sport asked United fans ‘Which player should United prioritise attempting to sign in January?’

The overwhelming winner with 83 per cent of 9,414 votes was Maddison, who fans believe will be able to fix United’s dire lack of creativity in the middle of the park.

In second place came ‘other’ with 9 per cent of the vote, with fans calling for the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Erling Braut Halland and Moussa Dembele among those being called for.

In third place was the other midfielder Rice, with 5 per cent of the vote, who while not as creative as Maddison would instead provide much needed steel and protection for the defence.

Finishing in fourth place is Chilwell with just 2 per cent of the vote as fans believe midfield and attack are areas that need to be prioritised.
