BBC Sport pundit left stunned by Arsenal’s Premier League table position

Arsenal are very lucky to be sitting in third spot in the Premier League table – because of how bad their defence still is.

That is according to BBC Sport pundit Garth Grooks, who was speaking after the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Sunday.

New signing David Luiz scored the only of the game at the Emirates and the three points moved Unai Emery’s side just one point behind champions Manchester City.

More importantly for Luiz and for Arsenal, the win over the Cherries was the Brazilian’s first clean sheet since signing from Chelsea.’s-Premier-League-table.jpg”/>

Emery’s men are still looking shaky at the back this season and have conceded at least twice in half of their Premier League games so far.

But things are looking up with defenders Hector Bellerin, Kieran Tierney, and Rob Holding almost back to full fitness.

The shut out against Bournemouth was no doubt a good sign for the Gunners as they look to claim a place in the top four.

But former Tottenham forward Crooks is still not convinced by the defence though and reckons Arsenal are very lucky to be sitting in third spot.’s-Premier-League-table.jpg”/>

“Just when Spurs fans think the week cannot get any worse, Arsenal win at home to Bournemouth and the victory takes them up to third in the table,” he said.

“Luiz, who never does things the easy way, scored his first goal for the Gunners and the only goal of the game but more importantly kept his first clean sheet in an Arsenal shirt.

“I cannot believe this Arsenal team are third in the table. I know we are only eight games into the Premier League season but their defence has been so bad, how is this possible?”

To be in third after already playing Tottenham, Manchester United, and Liverpool in their eight games so far is positive for the north London outfit.’s-Premier-League-table.jpg”/>

And they have good fixtures coming up, with Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Leicester and Southampton up next.

Emery will be hoping to navigate the team’s way through the Europa League group stages as soon as possible to be able to concentrate on the league.

And they look set to do that after winning their first two matches in the group.

Next up is a home game against Vitoria SC on October 24 at the Emirates.
