Chelsea win over Southampton was all about the ‘senior players’ says Martin Keown | Football | Sport

Chelsea will be forced to rely on their more experienced players just as much as their young core if they are to finish in the top four.

That’s the opinion of former Arsenal defender Martin Keown.

Chelsea put in another impressive display on Sunday as they beat Southampton 4-1 on the south coast.

Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante and Mich Batshuayi got the goals at St Mary’s as Danny Ings pulled one back for the hosts.

Callum Hudson-Odoi made his first league start since returning from his Achilles injury earlier in the year.

The win puts Chelsea fifth in the Premier League, level on points with fourth-placed Leicester City.

Frank Lampard once again played a young team, with Abraham, Mount and Hudson-Odoi forming an impressive trio going forward.

But Keown explained on Match of the Day 2 that Lampard has been lucky with the performances of his more experienced players, with multiple players having improved from their first week defeat.

Chelsea got off to the worst possible start, as they lost 4-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford, but since then they have looked like a completely different team.

“You look at Manchester United, and obviously they [Chelsea] lost their first match of the season there,” Keown said.

“I think Frank Lampard as well, the way he’s managed to negotiate the situation, the story today wasn’t the young players, the story today was the senior players.

“Azpilicueta has made a few mistakes, Jorginho has been mixed in that midfield, Kante has been injured and not available, but Willian today was brilliant – that’s the good news.

“Those players are going to give you the fourth place, the consistency, and the younger guys are the icing on the cake.

“Now, it’s a really good time for Chelsea once more.”

Chelsea will now take on Newcastle United after the international break.
