Manager makes promise as Birmingham City complete transfer ahead of Derby clash

Welcome Josh

Josh McEachran has revealed who is responsible for bringing him to Birmingham City – Harlee Dean.

It was the Blues captain who pushed for McEachran to be given a chance to impress after his release from Brentford in the summer.

The 26-year-old, having spent the last few weeks on trial at Wast Hills, has signed a two-year contract.

McEachran told BluesTV: “It came through Harlee. Obviously I was with him at Brentford and I speak to him on a regular basis. He knew I was out of contract so he asked the question here to put my name forward.

“This was on the Tuesday and Dong (CEO) said ‘tell him to come in on Thursday and we’ll have a good look at him’ and this is where I am now.”

Prediction time

Eight games in, one international break down, we’re beginning to get a feel for this season’s Championship.

But what will the table look like at the end of October – and more specifically, where will Birmingham City be?

Pep Clotet’s side have responded to another stormy summer at St Andrew’s by picking up 13 points from the 24 available to them so far.

That’s a healthy return that has them nestled in 11th place at the moment and is probably a little better than most Blues fans expected after seeing their club lose a popular manager and their top goalscorer in the space of a fortnight.

Today’s trip to Derby County included, Blues have another six fixtures to play before October is out in what is shaping up to be a crucial month.

The away match at Leeds United undoubtedly stands out as the most difficult, but there are also a few fxtures which Clotet will see as big opportunities to pick up maximum points.

Here, Shane Ireland makes his predictions for the month ahead.

Manager’s promise

Phillip Cocu has promised Derby County will not ‘hide or run away’ when they take on Blues amid turbulent off field-events at the club.

Two Derby players, Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence, have been charged with drink-driving after a crash on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile club captain Richard Keogh has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury as a result of the incident.

Bennett and Lawrence will appear in court in October and the controversy has shone the national spotlight onto Derby ahead of Blues’ visit to Pride Park.

But Cocu insists he will not let it overshadow Derby’s Championship campaign, promising full focus from his players this afternoon.

All the best, Hughesy

Former Birmingham City midfielder Bryan Hughes has parted company with Wrexham after seven months in charge.

The 43-year-old has left his role as the National League side’s manager with immediate effect after a difficult start to the campaign.

Hughes, who played for Wrexham, took charge in February and guided the club to the play-offs last season where they were beaten by Eastleigh.

But the Dragons are languishing in the relegation zone having picked up just two wins from their first 12 matches this season.

Hughes wrote on Twitter: “It was an honour to manage the club, even under levels of uncertainty. I’m proud of my achievements (play offs, youth team debuts etc).

“Ultimately though, our results haven’t been good enough this season. I’ve always wanted what’s best for the club, and I leave with a heavy heart.”
