What really happened between Man Utd chief Ed Woodward and Phil Jones at West Ham

Manchester United bigwig Ed Woodward was talking to a club official and not berating Phil Jones during the Red Devils‘ 2-0 loss to West ham.

Contrary to speculation, United’s executive vice-chairman did not engage with the defender in the dugout during the London Stadium clash.

Sky Sports cameras picked out United centre-back Jones – who was sitting behind Woodward – appearing to mutter something under his breath.

Woodward could be seen immediately turning around and uttering something in Jones’ direction, looking clearly irritated.

However, it seems he was actually talking to a woman sitting next to the central defender, who appeared to be a club official.

Initial reports on Twitter claimed that Jones had made a joke about Solskjaer being sacked, with Woodward reportedly replying ‘We’re on camera, stop.”

The centre-back has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof the first choice pairing.

Andriy Yarmolenko fired the Hammers ahead before Aaron Cresswell’s stunning free-kick sealed the three points for the hosts in a convincing win.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won just five games since being given the job on a permanent basis, losing ten of 19 in all competitions.

And speaking after the game, former midfielder Roy Keane said he was “saddened” to see the state the club is currently in.

“I don’t know where to try, I know they weren’t in a great place but I am shocked and saddened by how bad they are,” he said.

“You can lose a game of football but everything about United was lacklustre.

“No quality. A lack of desire. A lack of leaders. A lack of characters. It is a long way back and it is scary just how far they have fallen.”

United welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford next Monday as they look to get back to winning ways.
