Steven Gerrard lifts lid on dilemma Rangers aces Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe give him | Football | Sport
Steven Gerrard has struggled to juggle Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe at Rangers while keeping both strikers happy.
The Light Blues cruised to a 4-0 victory over St. Johnstone in the Premiership on Saturday, and both forwards were on target.
Morelos started and scored the opening goal for Gerrard’s side before being substituted for Defoe with 10 minutes to go.
The ex-England striker then scored the third and fourth goals after Connor Goldson netted.
Liverpool hero Gerrard stated earlier in the season about he difficulty in managing playing time between the proven goalscorers, and he elaborated on Sunday.
Speaking to BT Sport, he said of Morelos: “He’s in terrific form.
“I thought on Thursday night for the majority of the game he was unplayable. That’s the reason I kept him in.
“It’s always tempting to make the change when you’ve got Jermain Defoe there, but while he’s like this we need to keep him on the pitch because he’s such a threat.
“He had a fantastic chance in the first half and nearly got us the breakthrough then.
“While he’s on the pitch you always know that if he keeps getting in the right places he’s going to find the back of the net.”
Ex-Rangers striker Billy Dodds lavished praise on Defoe after the fixture, and described why it was a perfect fixture for the 36-year-old.
He told BBC Sport: “When the game is this open and you are leaving space to try and get a goal then you’re playing risky football.
“When a player with the quality Defoe has gets in the box with the ball then there’s usually only one outcome.
“He’s that type of player that can absolutely ruin you.”
Next up for Rangers is a trip to play Livingston in the Scottish League Cup, before hosting Aberdeen in the Premiership.
