Real Madrid: Courtois’ outstanding balance
In general, Real Madrid are not in good form, but one of those areas which is struggling most is in goal, where Thibaut Courtois is performing below expectations and the thrashing against Paris Saint-Germain, with Keylor Navas at the other end, proved it.
It’s true that he was decisive with a late save against Levante last time out in LaLiga Santander, but he is still not reaching the level expected of him.
The situation is vastly different to his form for his country, Belgium, where he has kept nine clean sheets in his last 13 appearances and has not conceded for 524 minutes since facing Russia in March.
Other than the 5-2 defeat to Switzerland in November 2018, he has been a brick wall in goal for Belgium.
On the other hand, in Spain, he has not kept a clean sheet for Real Madrid since the 3-0 win over Alaves at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on February 3.
Since then, 15 games have gone by and five of them have been this season, with three goals conceded last time out in the Champions League.
Courtois believes that he can put an end to this run and feels his confidence has benefitted from not having Keylor Navas as a rival for the number one shirt.
Now he is the undisputed first choice, the club have given him the stability he wanted, but he must produce the goods, starting with the all important fixture against Sevilla.
