Jurgen Klopp provides Sadio Mane fitness update after Chelsea win

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has this evening opened up on the injury picked up by Sadio Mane, following his side’s meeting with Chelsea.

Liverpool win again

The Reds travelled to Stamford Bridge a short time ago, hoping to reestablish their 5-point lead over champions Manchester City atop the Premier League table.

Pep Guardiola’s Citizens put their shock 3-2 defeat to Norwich City last weekend firmly behind them yesterday afternoon, by means of a comprehensive 8-0 win over Watford.

As such, on the back of a defeat of their own in the club’s Champions League curtain-raiser on Tuesday night, the pressure was on Liverpool to bounce back in London this evening.

And, when all was said and done, this was precisely what the Merseysiders managed.

First-half goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino eventually proved telling, with N’Golo Kante’s superb strike 20 minutes from time having, in the end, proved little more than a consolation for Chelsea.

‘An awful combination’

One source of concern on an otherwise-positive day for Liverpool, however, came on the personnel front.

Star attacker Sadio Mane was forced off with 70 minutes gone, after pulling up in clear discomfort.

As such, speaking on the back of his side’s latest victory, Jurgen Klopp was this evening questioned on Mane’s well-being.

And the Liverpool boss went on to confirm that the Senegalese wide-man picked up both a knock around the knee, and a dead leg.

Klopp stopped short, though, of revealing whether or not Mane is now set for a spell on the sidelines:

‘It was a knock on the bone, around the knee, and a dead leg – that’s an awful combination.’

‘He tried everything but I think you saw, there was one counter situation when he really tried and I would say on a non-dead-leg day he will get that ball, but no chance and then we say ‘come on, now we have to do it’ and changed. That’s it.’
