Barcelona: Barcelona’s unrecognisable defence | MARCA in English
Barcelona Conceded the most goals in LaLiga Santander
Barcelona have been unrecognisable at the start of the season which has seen them pick up just two wins from their opening five LaLiga Santander matches, particularly in defence.
Having shipped nine goals in their first five games of the campaign, Barcelona currently have the worst defensive record in the division along with Real Betis.
On Sunday night, it was Granada‘s turn to dampen Barcelona‘s spirits, yet much of it was the Blaugrana’s own doing.
The first goal, inside the first minute, came as a result of an error by Junior Firpo while the second arrived following a clear handball in the box by Arturo Vidal, which allowed Alvaro Vadillo to send Marc-Andre ter Stegen the wrong way and slot home from the spot.
The match in Andalusia highlighted the shortcomings of Firpo in particular, who had a chance to stake a claim for a first team spot following an injury to Jordi Alba, but far from making a good impression, the youngster’s performance was blighted by his aforementioned error, with Ernesto Valverde even replacing him at half time.
The start of the season has certainly been an odd one for the Catalan giants, as their defence has traditionally been one of the more robust both domestically and in European competition, and the club’s coaching staff will have to rectify the issue sooner rather than later if they are to save their campaign from descending into calamity.
