Arsenal news: Ian Wright slams ‘irresponsible’ player for what he has said – ‘Oh my gosh’ | Football | Sport

Ian Wright has labelled Granit Xhaka as “irresponsible” for saying Arsenal were “scared” during their 2-2 draw with Watford last week.

Xhaka made the comment after the Gunners threw away a 2-0 half-time lead and arguably were lucky to take a point from Vicarage Road.

The Switzerland international has been wearing the captain’s armband this season following the departure of Laurent Koscielny in the summer.

But Wright says the current Arsenal skipper has sent out the wrong message to opposition teams.

He reckons opponents will use Xhaka’s comments as motivation for themselves.

“You don’t really want to here somebody saying you’re scared because then what will happen is teams will recognise [it] and then they’re going to start saying ‘they’re going to get scared’,” Wright told Premier League Productions.

“Whether you’re scared or not you’re going to get a kind of a pressure put on you where you’re going to be tested now.

“So it’s really, for me, it’s irresponsible of him to speak like that, for me.

“To hear it was like ‘oh my gosh, really, did you have to say that?’.

“Scared? How can you be scared on a football pitch?”

Xhaka said Arsenal were not mentally strong enough against Watford.

“No-one wanted the ball. In the end we are happy to take a point,” he said.

“We didn’t show our game in the second half, we were too scared.

“Every team in the Premier League is strong enough to score but you have to keep calm, to show good character, to be mentally strong. We weren’t today.”

Arsenal are back in action today when they host Aston Villa at the Emirates (4.30pm).

Alexandre Lacazette remains absent through an ankle injury, while full-backs Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney are close to returns following long spells on the sidelines.
