‘Utter disgrace’ Birmingham City fans point the blame at this man after Preston loss
Birmingham City’s unbeaten home run came to an end with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Preston North End on Saturday.
A first half goal from Sean Maguire condemned Blues to their first St Andrew’s defeat of the season and denied them the chance to go into the Championship’s top six.
Blues pushed for a second half equaliser but came up short against the efficient and well drilled visitors.
The home side felt as if they should have had a penalty in the second half, when Maxime Colin’s cross appeared to strike a Preston player’s arm. But despite vigorous protests from the player, referee Steve Martin waved away the incident.
It was one of a number of decisions that incensed the Blues fans, an anger that was only compounded after Alvaro Gimenez had a late goal chalked off for offisde.
In one incident in the second period, Martin stopped the game for a drinks break, something which confused Blues manager Pep Clotet.
“For me the big shout was to see a water-break in the game because that killed the whole momentum, that’s the first time I have seen it.
“I come from a country where we play games in 45 degrees without a water break, it was strange to see that.
“I see it in friendlies but I would have preferred the second half to have been played 45 minutes in a row, it’s not a friendly game.”
Blues fans across social media had similar frustrations on an afternoon of many for Clotet’s side.

@jxerl: Yes the ref was bad, but don’t let it cover the fact we were horrendous in every aspect of our game. Preston have done an absolute job on us again
@CarolBradyCPCM: Well that was a poor performance until about 60 mins in & then a spark ignited but too little too late by then. Ref was poor & what was that drink break with 10 mins to go?
@Jessica_Emmie82: Well that was something today… very frustrating & not just the ref. There’s no excuses for today’s play. I genuinely would love to know what @EFL are thinking or their rationale to the performance of their officials
@ooshimadeafunny: I hate blaming refs when we’ve played poor but how you can’t book the keeper for time wasting from the 50th minute is beyond me. Showed glimpses of what we can do towards the end but too little too late.
@Mike1983jabbari: Ref was terrible but any scout that’s watched us would know that if you stop Juke we offer nothing. Football is predictable and boring. Take nothing away from Preston as they closed us down well & reminded me of us under Monk
@RatersUK: Great call from the linesman, off side. Ref was still an utter disgrace though
@Charlie60619371: Disgraceful ref! Can’t justify 90% of his decisions
@ConwayBCFC: Not one to blame refs. But…. I’ve never seen such a vendetta against one player Juke was being assaulted at times with nothing given, then he breathed on a player and suddenly a foul is given
@TR90_: We was so poor today, ref was awful too. Not impressed with Preston either
