Tottenham news: Spurs slammed over transfer decision and told January signing must be made | Football | Sport

Tottenham were wrong to sell Kieran Trippier and must replace him in the January transfer window, claims former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara.

Trippier left Spurs to join Atletico Madrid in July for an initial fee of £20million.

That still left manager Mauricio Pochettino with two recognised right-backs in his squad in the shape of Kyle Walker-Peters and Serge Aurier.

But O’Hara does not think they are adequate replacements for England international Trippier.

He says it is clear, from Tottenham’s results this season, they could do with the 29-year-old in their defence.

“I think the problem you’ve got is that if [Christian] Eriksen goes, people will start questioning where the ambition is with the football club and they’re going to be like ‘are we going to kick on here? Are we going to get players in?’,” O’Hara said on talkSPORT.

“The biggest one for me is the Trippier one [which] I found strange.

“That’s where they’re struggling, Tottenham can’t hold onto a lead at the minute.

“They keep giving away poor goals and they didn’t replace someone who I thought was one of their best players.

“So in January I think they’re going to have to obviously look at that straight away.

“The back four to me doesn’t look as solid as it was last season.”

Earlier this month Trippier claimed he did not want to leave Tottenham and thought it was the wrong time for the club to let him go.

“I just feel that Tottenham probably got rid of me at the wrong time,” he said.

“I just needed that four-week rest for recovery because I was struggling with injuries to come back, fresh, ready.

“It’s disappointing. I gave everything for the club and I wanted to stay. I had another couple of years left. But everything happens for a reason.”
