Art is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Inside David James’ art collection – Strictly star shows off his work on Instagram

Former England goalkeeper David James may have seen some strokes of genius on the football pitch – but he is also a dab hand with the paint brush.

The goalkeeper made 53 appearances for his country over 14 years.

And he stepped on the pitch at club level nearly 1,000 times.

James spent 18 seasons in the Premier League with teams including Liverpool and Manchester City.

His career on the pitch ended five years ago with Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters.

And the former shot-stopper is taking to the Strictly Come Dancing stage this year.

Partnered with Nadia Bychkova, the 49-year-old will don the sequins in the 17th series of the dance competition on BBC One.

But this is not the first time James has been involved in the arts.

The former Three Lions goalkeeper enjoyed painting in his free time during his long playing career.

And James regularly posts his work on Instagram to his 138,000 followers.

His latest piece is a portrait of YouTube star and friend David Vujanic.

It shows the Serbian posing in Southampton’s dressing room for a charity match three years ago.

And he made a stunning depiction of two cats during a trip to Hong Kong.

James smiles while posing with the snap.

Three years ago, one of his pieces even made it auction.

James re-created the moment England legend Bobby Moore received the World Cup from the Queen in 1966.

And it was donated to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK three years ago.

Speaking at the event, he said: “I’m not claiming to be Picasso but I am extremely fond of this painting because it captures the biggest moment in English football’s history.”

James will be competing in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, with live shows starting on September 21.
